First off, let me apologize for taking so much time off as of late. I have been extraordinarily busy with my current job and as such, I’ve been unable to write anything of substance until now. Hopefully, I’ll be posting more regularly from now on.
Now you may be wondering what I’m talking about when I ask the question “Boom or Bust?” and to be honest, I don’t really have an exact answer for you on that one. What I can say is that after reading up on all the discussions and thoughts flying around Chiefs Nation this summer, I think that those three words will be the catchphrase for the Chiefs this season.
Boom or bust will be the question we’ll all be asking once our superstar draft class finally hits the field this fall.
Boom or bust will be the question first on most Chiefs fans minds if our young team fails to come together and the team ends up with a similar record as last season or worse.
And boom or bust could very well be the difference between Chiefs GM Carl Peterson and Head Coach Herm Edwards keeping their jobs for another season, or receiving a rather large pink slip courtesy of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt.
If the Chiefs outstanding draft class (Dorsey, Albert, et al) gets into camp on time and plays up to the level we’re all hoping for, the word boom will be sliding off our tongues by week four. But on the flip side of that coin is the word bust, and if (god forbid) the injury bug strikes, or our O-line continues its disastrous play of one season ago, we could very well be crying bust before week two.
That’s why I think it’s absolutely paramount that the Chiefs are able to get all their draft picks into camp on time, and find ways to get each player to buy into the system from day one. There can be no room for dissent on this ship in my opinion. Every single player must play up to their full abilities and not allow outside pressures to cause them to lose focus at the critical moments of a game. This is a team that will live and die as one, and if anyone steps out of line, it could very well spell the end of any chances the Chiefs may have to register a quality season this year.
Boom or bust… for the team’s sake and our own as fans, I truly hope we’ll be talking about the former as opposed to the latter when the season comes to a close. This city and the team’s fan base needs to see some signs of life from the Chiefs and the best way to do that is to win a few games that no one expected them to win. And if the Chiefs can learn to play as one for 60 minutes each Sunday, that will happen much faster than any of us could hope for as it stands right now.
