Back in the Saddle - Fanatic 411

I decided to take this past weekend off to get some much needed R & R, and man it was nice. I needed the break in a bad way. But don’t worry, I’m back for the long haul now, so you’ll be seeing a lot of content coming out here soon.

Since I’ve been out of the loop for the past few days, I thought it would be good to do a quick rundown of all the information that has come down the pike in Chiefs Nation as of late. Keep checking back throughout the day, as I’ll be starting up a new series breaking down the Chiefs positional groups. Until then, enjoy my top three links for today.

Chiefs get four players from recent try-out

Here’s the list:

WR Kevin McMahan (Chiefs PS ‘07)

RB Steven Jackson (Vikings/Panthers)

OT Ken Shackleford (Rams)

LB E.J. Kuale (Saints)

The real surprise out of this group is that none of the players signed were rookie free agents. All four have been to camp with one team in the NFL or another over the past few years, and while they all have some talent that they can offer the Chiefs, I doubt very seriously that they’ll end up making the final 53 man roster when things are all said and done in August. I would have liked to see a guy like Pig Brown (Missouri) or James McClinton (Kansas) get signed after the try-out camp, but I’ll defer to Herm’s judgment on this one.

Former Chiefs DT Joe Phillips Comes Clean

Big thanks to Arrowhead Pride for the tip on this one…

The Joe Phillips saga took a new turn recently, when he started up a blog to set the record straight on some of the accusations made by his ex-wife in an article done by the KC Star a while back. It’s a lot of he said-she said right now, but seeing as Phillips was one of my favorite players growing up in KC, I will side with him until the things said against him have been proven without a doubt.

Here’s a quick sound bite from his post on May 6th, 2008:

“… talk about a railroad job. Move to jurisdiction in which her parents work in the courthouse in a family law, when every ounce of financial gain or status was beaten out of me after years of football, then construct a circumstance in which he [Phillips] is painted as something he is not-it took time, two years–then take the money (Cindy transfered over 2 million out of accounts within less than forty-five days of the divorce filing and another 1.7 million upon conclusion of the divorce financial matters) and the children. So much for the lie about me spending 90% of the money I made on the football field–the lies, distortions and manipulations are pervasive and are not motivated by adherence to actual occurrences but by how the statements can create views in people that help her execute her plan.”

    Say Goodbye to Wesley

The Chiefs are set to release safety Greg Wesley very soon, unless a deal is arranged to trade him to another team. That wouldn’t be likely considering his imminent release, so it’s pretty safe to say he’s done in KC. This move was pretty much a foregone conclusion after the Chiefs drafted safety DaJuan Morgan in the 3rd round of the draft a few weeks back, and while Wesley made some outstanding plays for the Chiefs early on in his career, he seemed to take plays off from time to time.

Both Arrowhead Pride and Arrowhead Addict have their own write ups on Wesley and his upcoming departure from KC.

The image of him whiffing on Browns QB Derek Anderson on a critical third and long play in Cleveland two seasons ago will stand out in my mind forever. Hopefully he’ll land a job somewhere else, but I doubt that he’ll ever be a full-time starter again. Way too many mistakes for someone as talented as he is.

That Joe Phillips blog is pretty intense, huh?

For sure. I wish he gave more specifics and didn’t end the story so abruptly though. It makes his side of things more difficult to believe.
