Done and done

I decided to take a break from the draft today and went on a mini-trip up north here in Minnesota to relax at the lake a bit, since I really haven’t stopped running with the draft since the off-season started back in February. I kept track of all the Chiefs picks (thanks to my Blackberry phone courtesy of my 9-5 job) but I decided against posting anything around here until now. Hopefully, you all spent the time checking out our favorite Chiefs fan sites like Arrowhead Addict, Arrowhead Pride, and the Chiefs Coalition Forums because the coverage on those sites was second to none in my opinion.

At any rate, I thought I would give you my thoughts on each Chiefs selection this weekend and where I see them fitting in for our team in the fall, instead of just recapping who the Chiefs took and where they picked them in the draft. I’ll start with Glenn Dorsey and hopefully end up the series later this week with our own Mr. Irrelevant, Mike Merritt. Enjoy!

The Chiefs were able to get the steal of the century in the minds of pretty much every single analyst, and in the minds of about 99.9% of Chiefs fans as well on Saturday, when they looked up and saw that Defensive Tackle Glenn Dorsey was still on the board. Personally, I expected the Rams to call his name #2 overall, which would have left us an outside shot at my favorite player in the draft, Chris Long, but once the Rams and Falcons passed on Dorsey, I knew he was ours. Since I was hosting my radio show at the time, I tried to keep my composure and not go crazy, but let me tell you, it was hard to contain my excitement at that point.

Much like every other rational fan and analyst, I see Dorsey as our starting 3 gap Defensive Tackle from Day 1. Dorsey primarily played the 2 gap in college, which forced him to tie up multiple blockers and then clean up any leftovers. He obviously excelled at doing just that, but when the LSU defensive staff allowed him to shoot through the gaps and collapse the pocket, Dorsey proved why he would be worth a Top 5 pick. He racked up big time stats in pretty much every category measured in the college game, and made big play after big play during the Tigers’ run to the National Championship.

He is a dominant player that will only make the other players on the Chiefs defensive line that much better, as he should garner double teams pretty regularly. That should free up DE Tamba Hali to wreak havoc from former Chiefs DE lead Vikings jackass, Jared Allen’s old spot on the right side of our defense, along with last season’s 1st half standout at DT, Alfonso Boone. And if the Chiefs can get solid run defense and a decent pass rush from Turk McBride/rookie DE Brian Johnston on the left side, we could easily have a better defensive line then we did last year.

Glenn Dorsey also brings a ton of excitement and energy to the team, and should fit in with no problems on a young team in need of standout leaders. He is the anchor on our defensive line that the Chiefs have needed for years, and as long as he stays healthy, he should make us forget about Jared Allen the crybaby about as fast as he forgot about us.

Here’s Dorsey’s highlights, courtesy of Rivals.com:
