It’s Monday afternoon here in the Great White North (AKA the Twin Cities, MN) and I’m really tired right now. I took a nice long long weekend to watch all the great college basketball action, and while I did come away disappointed when my Pitt Panthers squad failed to make it out of the 2nd round, I have to say that this time of year is one of the best. It’s not quite on par with October - when the NFL playoff hunt starts heating up and the MLB playoffs are in full swing - but it’s a great time to be a fan of sports all the same.
At any rate, there’s not much floating around the wire today - big surprise huh? - so I thought I’d give you all a quick run down of some news that came around this past weekend in Chiefs Nation, just in case you missed it while you were glued to the TV set like me.
- The Chiefs new Offensive Coordinator - Chan Gailey - evidently likes what he sees in the core of the team’s offense. I’ve been saying the same thing all off-season long. If Gailey can find a way to consistently get solid yards on running plays with LJ, and find DBowe/Gonzo downfield openings for Brodie Croyle to throw to, I think we’ll be in for a pleasant surprise this fall.
- Arrowhead Pride is running their community mock draft right now, and so far their haven’t been too many surprises, although they’ve only selected for two teams so far, so things could get crazy later on down the line. Matt Ryan to the Dolphins with the #1 overall pick is not what I expect, but when the Big Tuna is involved, it’s anyone’s guess as to what they’re going to do.
- Michael Ash - the new beat writer for Warpaint Illustrated - has a pretty solid piece up on the lack of commitment shown to Brodie Croyle this off-season. While I can’t say that I think the Chiefs should have overpaid for guys like Bernard Berrian or Javon Walker, it would be nice to know exactly where the Chiefs stand on Croyle’s future with the team prior to the draft next month.
- Peter King - of Sports Illustrated fame - threw out a juicy bit of gossip today with a quick anecdote on the Chiefs possible intentions in the upcoming draft:
“Strange thing here. At the combine, Carl Peterson told me the Chiefs loved Ryan, but there was no way they could take him because of their needs elsewhere. (Offensive line, I’m guessing.) Then they sent half the front office to his workout the other day at BC. Methinks Carl does not want to be the man to pass on the guy he thinks will be a franchise player. The other thing this does is buy coach Herman Edwards one more year of rebuilding. Even if the Chiefs go 5-11 this year, they couldn’t whack Edwards until after they got a really good look at Ryan.”
Repeat after me Carl Peterson: “Do not draft Matt Ryan with the 5th overall pick!”
- And finally in other news, Kansas City’s bloated bag of all things negative - Jason Whitlock - seems to think that the platform he has been so lucky to receive courtesy of the otherwise worthless rag known as the KC Star Sports section should be used as a means to spread his particular brand of political ideology and support of Barack Obama. Although I can’t say that I prefer his opinion pieces on KC sports to this unsolicited campaign endorsement, Whitlock would be wise to stick to his weekly rants on King Carl, Gates BBQ, and how Jeff George is the savior of mankind instead.

Chris, you know I love the site, but why can’t one of Americans’ foremost black sports columnists use his platform to discuss the first serious black Presidential candidate ever? Jason has always been passionately involved in the race discussion, i.e. the Don Imus situation (CNN, MSNBC, etc…). Does he really have to just shut up and talk about sports? He’s not just a sportswriter, I’ve always seen him as a black writer, and in a good way. That’s part of his audience, his passion. And nobody was forced to read it.
Yes, I agree with Jason on this matter, but that’s beside the point. I think Americans should use their platform to speak up and try to make this country better, not be condemned for it.
Adam, thanks for your thoughts. I don’t have a problem with Whitlock giving his opinion on Obama. I just don’t like him doing it in the Sports section. He’s probably one of the longest tenured writers at the Star, so you would think he could snap his fingers and be able to publish an op-ed piece in the section of the paper dedicated to political matters, but instead he took up space in the Sports section to do it. The Imus thing involved sports, so I didn’t really have a problem with him talking about that, but this went too far for me I guess.
Thanks again for dropping by and keep up the good work over at AA.
